The ORIGINAL Ugly Dog Contest website

Dear Dog Enthusiasts,

The Del Mar Kiwanis Club would like to offer you the opportunity to participate as a sponsor, exhibitor or product donations for our upcoming 11th Annual Ugly Dog Contest. The event will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2006, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Del Mar, CA. There will be fourteen categories including Best Trick, Best Costume, Cutest Dog, etc. (See attached flyer for all categories) Last year we had nearly 400 entries, and over 2000-3000 attendees. This event has become increasingly popular each year. In fact, our Ugly Dog winners have appeared on the "Tonight Show" with Jay Leno!

Proceeds from the contest will benefit Helen Woodward Animal Center's Therapeutic Riding Program and Rancho Coastal Humane Society's Animal Safehouse Program. The Therapeutic Riding Program offers weekly riding lessons for physically and cognitively challenged children and adults, while the Animal Safehouse Program provides free shelter and care for the pets of victims of domestic violence. The following are heartfelt stories:

Helen Woodward Animal Center "Amy" has a cardiovascular syndrome that has required multiple heart surgeries. She is hearing impaired and is quite small for her age. "Amy" loves animals and is very motivated to work on her language through her participation in weekly Therapeutic Riding sessions at Helen Woodward Animal Center. The instructors try to give her opportunities to work on her speech whenever possible and she has greater confidence in herself and her abilities than ever before

Rancho Coastal Humane Society "My name is Taylor. A year and a half ago my mom's boyfriend beat her up and we had to move to a Domestic Violence shelter. Moving was hard on mom and me. I was scared that Buster would not have a home to go to. I was so happy that there was a safe place for my dog. He is very much a part of our family. Rancho Coastal Humane Society was very nice to Buster and took good care of him. I was so glad to get Buster back. I was happy that there were nice people and other pets for Buster to stay with."

You are helping to make weekly riding lessons possible for "Amy" and so many other physically and cognitively challenged children and adults through your generous support of the Del Mar Kiwanis' Ugly Dog Contest. Not only are the proceeds from the event going to help children like "Amy" but they are also going to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society Animal Safehouse Program to help support their programs for victims of domestic violence.

As a sponsor, your name and logo will be included on flyers to be distributed throughout San Diego County for six weeks prior to the contest. The "North County Times" will feature your logo twice a week during the six-week promotion period (see enclosed copy of advertisement and flyer). In addition, there will be extensive print media, radio and television coverage before and during the event.

We promise you a unique, fun-filled Sunday afternoon! Please give serious consideration to sponsoring this event. The publicity, community goodwill and large number of prospective customers offer your company a participation package that is hard to ignore. Please complete the enclosed registration form today, or feel free to contact me at (858) 755-5913 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Sheila McDonnell

P.S. Because of the generous product donations last year we were able to make incredible gifts for all our winners!

Dear Competitors,

DogĄ¯s Rule! Paw Power! ThatĄ¯s what I like to call it! We kicked tail last year!

Another year has trotted by and itĄ¯s time to bark and roll at the Del Mar Kiwanis 11th Annual Ugly Dog Contest with 14 fun filled categories to compete in. (See attached flyer for all categories, dates and times.)

We donated a lot of money for our friends at the Helen Woodward Therapeutic Riding Program and the Rancho Coastal Humane Society Safe House Program.

We need your help to make this year even better! ItĄ¯s time for you and your human to come and show yourself off at the Del Mar Fairgrounds 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Del Mar, Ca. 92014
(Paddock Area of Race Track)

We say every dog has its day and this could be yours. You know itĄ¯s one fun afternoon for dogs and their families because there arenĄ¯t many places we can all play together. (Great Prizes!)

HereĄ¯s what I want you to do, give the enclosed flyer to your human and encourage him/her to come out and show you off on Sunday. We will roll over and would love to see you back.

Loves and Licks,

Miss Tooey
